The State of Qatar stressed that outer space activities were indispensable tools for economic, social, environmental, health and natural resource management.
HE Sheikh Ali Bin Jassim Al-Thani, Permanent Representative of Qatar to United Nations Organizations in Vienna, addressed the 55th session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, currently held in Vienna, that the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space This is a sign of the growing importance that countries attach to this committee, as the activities of outer space have become indispensable tools for economic, social, environmental, health and natural resource management, in addition to the role of these activities in the blindness Our understanding of the universe and the protection of our planet.
He stressed that the State of Qatar is working in accordance with a solid and far-reaching plan to settle and consolidate the infrastructure of its outer space activities, including legislative tools, preparing national cadres specialized in space science and technology and integrating space science and technology into national development plans. He pointed out that the State of Qatar launched the first telecommunications satellite in Qatar (Suhail-1) in 2013, and the Qatari engineers are currently working on the design and manufacture of the second satellite Suhail-2, to be launched this year.
The State of Qatar continues to build partnerships and strengthen cooperation with countries and space agencies in the field of other peaceful uses of outer space. The State of Qatar is counting on the support of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOSOM) for its future space programs.
In his speech, he also commended the efforts made to prepare for the commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNISPACE + 50) and the draft resolution prepared by the Secretariat of the Committee on Space as an engine for sustainable development, We are looking forward to the Working Group on the Long-term Sustainability of Outer Space Activities concluding its work by adopting the full set of guidelines at the Committee's session in June for adoption by the General Assembly next September.
The international community looked forward with hope to the results of the meetings of the Committee on Outer Space this year and regarded it as a qualitative step towards emphasizing the common interest of mankind in promoting and expanding the exploration of outer space and in promoting the rule of law and the norms of international space law. The activities of outer space, without discrimination and on equal terms, and the inadmissibility of the possession of outer space under the pretext of sovereignty, use, occupation or any other means, non-militarization of outer space and the prevention of an arms race and the exploitation of this space only for peaceful purposes and for the advancement of development Sustainable human to front, and ward off the dangers of the planet, and to confirm the principle of regional and international cooperation in the use of outer space for peaceful purposes and the consolidation of peace on the planet.
He stressed that the State of Qatar will work with the member states of the Committee and with all UN member states to achieve these goals for the common benefit of mankind.
